It was reported to be emaciated. Examination revealed that it had been affected by lack of enough browse due to dry spell. Water levels had risen constricting the eight giraffe within a small stony area. They were advised to supplement with horse cubes and Lucerne. Also advised to create a pathway between plain lower area and uphill for free movement and acquire enough forage.
The reportedly weak candidate was darted using 12mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Xylazine. It was given 12000mgs Tetracycline, 40cc multivitamin both intramuscularly and 40mgs ivermectin subcutaneously. He was revived using 36mgs Diprenorphine and 5mgs Atipamezole

Injury


Depicted lameness on the right fore limb. It had a cut wound at medial aspect of carpal joint but joint integrity was okay. It was treated as infected wound and prognosed good.
Immobilized using 10mgs Etorphine and 100mgs Xylazine. 8000mgs Penicillin was administered intramuscularly. Wound was cleaned using Hydrogen Peroxide first followed by Iodine. Wound tetracycline spray was applied topically. Revived using 30mgs Diprenorphine and 10mgs Atipamezole intravenously

translocation


Rescued from the public beach near Crescent Island as they were possible game meat targets. They were captured and translocated to Mundui Estate 18kms away while under narcosis. An open pick up was used to ferry them to destination
Each was immobilized using 4mgs Etorphine and 30mgs Xylazine. Each was revived using 12mgs Diprenorphine and 3 mgs Atipamezole.

Rescued from a fence of a residential compound where it had been tethered using a piece of climber. It is under treatment due to soft tissue injury on the tethered limb.
Re introduction back to the wild will be tried later after treatment

Tumor


Had a tumorous swelling on the lateral side of right hind limb near hock joint. It was cauliflower shaped and since it was lactating, tumors ‘foot’ was ligated using elastic bladder. The tumor was attended to like a wound and systemic and local antibacterial cover was done. It is under observation
Immobilized using 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Xylazine. 6000mgs Tetracycline was injected at the peduncle and a similar intramuscularly. The ulcer on the surface was cleaned using Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine. Tetracycline wound spray was applied topically. Revived using 18mgs Diprenorphine and 5mgs Atipamezole.

Had a plain snare wire on the right hind limb which was tight but had not caused any wound.




Had a cut wound on the right fore limb which was exposing deep digital flexor tendon causing
Each was immobilized using 10mgs Etorphine and 100mgs Xylazine.

 The plain snare wire was tight but had not caused any wound. It was severed using Wire cutter.

The wound was cleaned using Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine. Tetracycline wound spray was

Had a ligating plain iron wire around the hips causing severe trauma. It was desnared and resultant wound treated.
Darted using 3mgs Etorphine and 30mgs Xylazine. Two darts were used. Wound was cleaned using Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine. Tetracycline wound spray was applied topically. 2000mgs tetracycline was given intramuscularly. Was revived using 12mgs Diprenorphine and 3mgs Atipamezole.

Had a snare wound on the right hind fetlock area. The snare had snapped off. It was treated
Darted using 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Xylazine. Wound was cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine. Topically wound spray was applied. 6000mgs Penicillin was administered intramuscularly. She was revived using 18mgs Diprenorphine and 5mgs Atipamezole.

Had a fractured right hind limb at metatarsus. A ‘string’ of skin was the one holding the distal piece of limb. It was euthanized
Darted using 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Xylazine. It was euthanized using 400mgs Sodium Pentobarbitone.

Both were unable to get up. They were highly emaciated and thrifty. This is due to contracted hunger carried over from dry period till now when substantial forage is yet to grow
Both were euthanized each with 400mgs Sodium Pentobarbitone intravenously. They were buried.

Had invaded residential Naivasha Kongoni Lodge causing fear and panic. They were chased away into the nearby Mundui Estates

Rescued from children who were trying to kill it. It had been hit with a stone and had a penetrating cut wound on the shell. Wound was treated but it succumbed during the night
Wound had been cleaned using Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine. Penicillin antibiotic cream was infiltrated into the fissure.

Had a traumatic wound as a result of an embedded snare wire. It was desnared and wound treated locally and systemically.
Was immobilized using 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Xylazine. Wound was cleaned using Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine. All dead debris were removed and tetracycline wound spray applied topically. 12000mgs tetracycline was given intramuscularly.

Had a plain wire snare around the neck hanging downward to the hind limbs. The single plain wire was severed using wire cutter and there was no resultant wound since it was reported early.
Was darted using 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Xylazine. He was revived from narcosis using 18mgs Diprenorphine and 5mgs Atipamezole.

Had a plain wire snare around its hips. It was tight making the animal unapproachable. It was desnared by severing using wire cutter and there was no resultant wound since it was reported early
Narcosis was effected by 3mgs Etorphine and 30mgs Xylazine. One dart missed. It was reversed from narcosis using 12mgs Diprenorphine and 3mgs Atipamezole.

Had a wedge snare wire on the right fore limb at fetlock resulting to severe traumatic wound. It was severed using hack saw. Wound was cleaned using Hydrogen Peroxide and iodine. Tetracycline wound spray was applied on the wound topically
Immobilization was effected using 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Azaperone. 12000mgs Penicillin was injected intramuscularly. 30cc of Pyrethroid was applied as acaricide topically. It was revived using 18mgs Diprenorphine and 5mgs Atipamezole.

Had a traumatic snare wire around the face. It had caused emaciation and injury-corneal ulcer to right eye and neck. The plain snare wire was carefully without causing any trauma severed with wire cutter.
He was immobilized using 3mgs Etorphine and 30mgs Xylazine in 1.5cc dart. Penicillin cream was applied on the eyes, 400mgs penicillin was injected intramuscularly, 20cc Multivitamin subcutaneously and wound was cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide and iodine. Tetracycline wound spray was applied on the wound.

Had an amputated left hind limb at the level of fetlock. Cause suspected to be traumatic snare. Was euthanized to avoid unnecessary suffering
Darted using a combination of 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Xylazine. 400mgs Sodium Pentobarbitone was used to put it down.

Had a snare wire around the neck. It was tight though not traumatic. It had choke effect on the neck. The snare loop was loosened and taken off the neck
Darted with a mixture of 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Xylazine. One dart missed. Was revived using 18mgs Diprenorphine and 5mgs Atipamezole.

Had a penetrating wound on the right hind limb at the posterior side of metatarsus. It was treated and prognosed favorable
Was immobilized using 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Xylazine. The wound was cleaned using Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine. Antibiotic cream was infiltrated into the wound and systemic antibiotic cover was done using 8000mgs. It was revived using 18mgs Diprenorphine and 5mgs Atipamezole.

Had a wart-like skin swelling about 8cms diameter on its left ear. It had a small pocket of pus. 3000mgs tetracycline were injected just underneath the peduncle,6000mgs of the same intramuscularly on that neck side, the ‘wart’ was thoroughly washed with hydrogen peroxide and later iodine. Tetracycline wound spray was liberally applied. An elastic ligature was applied on the peduncle ‘foot’
Darted using 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Xylazine. It was revived using 18mgs Diprenorphine and 5mgs Atipamezole. It will be revisited after one month to assess the progress.

Had a plain snare wire around the neck and was barely tight dropping down to the hind limbs. It was desnared. No resultant wound was present
Immobilized by a mixture of 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Xylazine. The snare loop was loosened and snare taken off the neck. She was revived using 18mgs Diprenorphine and 5mgs Atipamezole administered intravenously.
