Disease Surveillance Recce
|
|
Following report of deaths of buffalos in Lake
Nakuru National Park a recce was conducted to plan on how to institute a
disease investigation. It was found that twelve buffalos had died at
different locations within the park with many being at WCK area. Eleven of
which were old animals as depicted by dentition. Two calves each darted with
2mgs Etorphine and 40mgs Azaperone after depicting bottle jaw and swollen
belly.
|
It was established that very emaciated individuals
could be spotted in big herds. The carrying capacity was also exceeded and
dry spell also challenged the heavy grazers on availability of palatable and
sufficient forage. It was decided that an investigation would be instituted
to determine the blood chemistry. Two calves were treated of helminthosis
with 40mgs Ivermectin subcutaneous and 7500mgs Tetracycline intramuscular
plus 25ml Multivitamin intramuscular each.
