2 Zebras-Male & Female

Both were spotted with plain single wire snares
around their necks dropping down to the limbs. One had caused alopecia of the
neck due to constant friction denoting long period it had stayed with the
snare. Both were barely tight. Snoops were loosened and taken off the neck.
Slight abrasions on the neck of the female were cleaned with Hydrogen
Peroxide and Iodine. Then sprayed with Tetracycline wound spray.

|
Patrol
|
Snaring status
|
A car patrol was conducted through Hells Gate all
the way to Kedong up to Longonot Gate. This over time has been a hot spot in
snaring and now that there has been no report over ¼ year a patrol was
necessary to assess
|
the snaring status of the animals within the
locality. The aim of patrol was to identify/spot any snared animal and where
possible desnare thus relieving the pain and suffering of the snared animal.
Fortunately there was none spotted.

Community talk
|
One residence had requested to have a talk with the
Unit. He was met in his house where he showed disturbing pictures of a
‘Diplomat’ who is illegally killing wildlife and takes pleasure in that. The
most recent incidence he arrowed warthog(s) in Oserian Airstrip on 3/5/2015.
He uses archery equipment. In one photo he had killed four impalas including
a young one.
|
It is reported that he consumes them because there
was a picture of warthog stew. He preserves them in fringe and freezers in
his house. His residence is known. I instructed the informer to call when he
has the game in his car or when he is in the process of killing/arrowing
these animals. This intelligence will be shared with area in-charge Investigation
team in presence of area Senior warden and in-charge Station for appropriate
action to be taken.

Masai Giraffe-Male & Eland-Female
|
Cases Review
|
Giraffe had been desnared on 3/5/2015 and Eland had
been treated on 29/4/2015. The severity of the conditions and the age of the
candidates necessitated review. Giraffe was too young while eland was old. A
patrol was carried out with aim of ascertaining how both
|
Animals were recovering and it was amazing. Both
were found in individual groups intermingling well and browsing. Swelling of
the snared limb had subsided while the eland wound had dried and started
scabbing. There was no treatment done as both were ruled out of danger.

Patrol
|
Snaring Status
|
A joint patrol was conducted between the Nyumba kumi
members and the Unit within and around the Farm. This is after having no
report from the farm for over a month despite being snare hot spot.
|
Animals were all healthy and no snare was witnessed
on them. Only one snare meant for small game was found mounted but we
dismantled it. At least lack of snared animal shows that since start of
collaboration with Nyumba Kumi poachers have been deterred from game meat as
they are known.

Diarrhea Review
|
Had been treated by Dr. Kaitho earlier. Harry had
improved his stool but Alf was still having watery diarrhea. I recommended
that routine practice be done, record maintenance be enhanced, Vaccination
against Parvo, Canine Distemper, Tryps and rabies be done and also all
imported dogs undergo blood chemistry and Urine analysis.
|
Alf treatment was substituted from Penicillin to
Diseptoprim once every day for five days and that he be put on limited
exercises/training. Review will be done next day upon commencement of the
treatment.

Bat- Eared Fox
|
Postmortem/Poisoning
|
This male was found dead near residence. Postmortem
revealed torn/busted jejunum and massive congestion of mucus membranes
supporting hemorrhagic diarrhea as observed from rectum.
Female on the other had had less congestion and
hemorrhages suggesting she got little poison. She also managed to cover long
distance before death.
This is suspected to have been done by farm hands
within these white residential areas who are rearing chicken. Thorough
investigation will be carried out to establish possible culprits.
