Snare/Postmortem
|
|
Reported having died near a water hole. Observation
shown that it had two wedge snares. One around the head at the level of the
eyes and it was older than the other one which was around the flank. It had
cut the head one while the other was the one which anchored around a leleshwa
shrub leading to death of the buffalo as it strained to release itself. This
prompted quick joint patrol within the area together with Hells Gate NP PAC
team. Four suspects were found within nearby bush and after a chase they dropped
what appeared to be the snaring gadgets they had used and that they were
trailing the dead buffalo. Knives, packing papers-wrappers, nylon sacs, wedge
wires and machetes were among the confiscated items.
|
Confiscated items
Dead buffalo with head and flank snare ‘tethered’
around the leleshwa. Suspected poachers took to their heels and disappeared
in the thick bush in the nearby valleys /gorges. Frequent patrols will be
carried out within the entire area.

be caused by severe prevailing lack of forage. It was euthanized and disposed
away from the visitors eyes using 2000mgs Sodium Pentobarbital into jugular

Snares
|
|
They had been reported the previous day but were
never spotted because rain inhibited the exercise. All had plain single wires
around their necks. All were barely tight. The animals couldn’t allow any
approach as they were frightened and kept on running away.
|
Two darts each of 2.5mgs Etorphine and 30mgs
Azaperone missed the target while the third of 5mgs Etorphine and 50mgs
Azaperone was faulty as it went subcutaneous. It was left lodged on the
female adult as it could not allow redarting. They will be attended after two
days after they settle.

Snares.
|
|
The location was visited to ascertain the status of
the matter after two zebras escaped from being desnared two days earlier.
Surprisingly it was established that there were fresh snares. 3 more zebras
had snares either around the neck or around the limbs and
|
One had plastic around the limb. Unfortunately all
were unapproachable as they ran into thick bush. They were tracked down only
to bump onto two laid
Traps. They were anchored around the Leleshwa
trunks. They were severed with wire cutter. Desnaring will be tried later
after the animals settle

maggots. The necrotic flap had few attachments on the skin full of pus. The
necrotic flap was trimmed with surgical knife avoiding further trauma on the points
of attachments. Maggots were fished out manually. Wound was cleaned liberally
with Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine.
|
Darted with 7mgs Etorphine and 100mgs Azaperone. The
pocket cleared off maggot was flushed with 30mgs ivermectin. The whole wound
was sprayed with Tetracycline wound spray. The animal was covered with
9000mgs Tetracycline and 20ml Multivitamin into muscles. 8mgs Ivermectin was
administered subcutaneously. 200ml Pyrethrin was applied as pour on. It was
revived using 24mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein

2 Zebras-couple
|
|
|
Both were spotted with plain wires around the necks.
It was obvious that the snares were meant for small game and both were barely
tight. Both snoops were loosened and taken off the neck.
The male had a small cauliflower like swelling on
the right temporal area with slim appendage. It appeared like a tumorous
swelling.
|
Male was darted with 5mgs Etorphine and 50mgs
Azaperone while the female by 3mgs Etorphine and 30mgs Azaperone. Each was
revived with 40mgs Naltrexone into jugular vein.
Two rubber bands were put around the foot of the
swelling to effect ‘strangulation’ by limiting blood supply with eventual
cicatration/excision.
