Lesser Flamingos
|
Deaths
|
|
Deaths were reported at Mundui estate area.
Surveillance revealed that deaths are as a result of boat operators who
frighten them so that tourists on board can take ‘smart’ photos eventually
earning boat operators huge tips. Flamingos end up hitting the fences which
are already submerged by the swelling lake which continue to swell as Lake
Naivasha continue to pour into lake Oloiden.
|
As saline Oloiden is interfered with by Fresh water
from L. Naivasha flamingo food becomes scarce and flamingos do not feed
enough. Flamingos of very low body weight have been collected dead and others
stray within the neighboring farms after they fall due to inability to fly to
Crater lake nearby. Others are found with broken limbs/wings and bruises as
they hit acacia trees or fences during flight. This has been communicated to

Habitat Encroachment
|
|
The habitat within their niche has been converted to
farm lands and felling of trees on the remaining marginal lands exposes these
animals to conflict with humans. The area was surveyed and report forwarded
to region research scientist for recommendation and way forward.

Zebra Foal-Male
|
Orphan
|
|
Had been spotted alone for two days within Oserian.
They had been instructed to drop it at Kongoni Game Valley for vet attention
immediately but brought it after two days. He was cold and dehydrated. Warm
beddings were supplied and given 2 Lactogen 1 meals two hours apart but it
succumbed after 5 hours.
|
Postmortem revealed dry mucus membranes which were
pale and lungs shown hyperemic patches of different sizes. This suggested
pneumonic signs thus the foal succumbed to pneumonia. Oserian were advised to
act quickly next time otherwise the foal could have been saved.

Rescue
|
|
Was reported to have been abandoned over 24hours. No
zebra had shown interest and had to be rescued for hand rearing. It was taken
to Naivasha Vet Center and introduced to Lactogen 1 formulae at around 7pm.
It was energetic and suckled well from feeding bottle.
|
It was reported to have started rolling after 12
hours and died shortly after. Postmortem revealed that it suffered flatulent
colic which was associated with desiccated meconium which was found in the
rectum. Jejunum and cecum were congested and engorged with gas.

|
Two had wedge snares on the right fore limbs at the
fetlock joints. They had severe lameness. Wounds were bleeding due to
friction of the snare. The wounded seemed to have a sharp object wound on the
right fore limb at fetlock joint laterally probably inflicted before it broke
loose from the trap. All wounds were cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide and
Iodine. Each had tetracycline wound spray topically with the sharp object
wound sealed with Green Clay to prevent maggot strike.
|
Each was immobilized using 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs
Azaperone. Each was injected with 18000mgs Tetracycline and 40mgs
Dexamethasone intramuscularly at different injection sites. Each was revived

The farm is about 250 hectares and almost completely
fenced except 321 meters which are yet to be fenced. It has a permanent
spring which is the source of Mayers mineral water bottled at the source.
They wanted to know the procedure of acquiring wild animals from KWS.
|
They were advised to apply for license from the
licensing office and also to contact the area warden to initiate the process
while they put up the remaining fence line and put in place security
arrangements.

contracture. All four hooves were trimmed to white line level using hoof
trimmer
-Septic wound was a remnant of desnaring. It was on
the left hind limb at the fetlock anteriorly. It depicted a lot of pain and
severe lameness.
|
Two were darted using 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs
Azaperone while the sub adult darted with 2mgs Etorphine and 30mgs Azaperone.

|
Visit
|
Snaring Status
|
|
The three areas records high snaring rates but no
report had been received for over a time. Animals were found okay and a lot
of zebras had moved to Kedong from two other areas leaving Wildebeests as
there were no grazing fields. Wildebeests carcasses were seen within Island
and Sanctuary as a result
|
Island and Sanctuary Farm are already over populated
with Wildebeests and zebras. Of concern are the former who do not move to
nearby Kedong Ranch for grazing. They have been thought to fear vehicles as
they have to close tarmac road. Translocation need to be done to ease
population pressure in two places.

Suspected Envenomation
|
|
Had been
treated of arthritis on 13/10/2013 but worsened from lameness to recumbency
and eventual death on 16/10/2013. No obvious sign of any external injury
noted. At the right armpit were points of blood ooze which were suspected to
be fang marks. There was local edema at that fang mark area and vascular
congestion after skinning.
|
This was followed to thoracic cavity where there was
hemothorax, heavy congestion of coronary vessels and superficial myocardium
congestion, fibrin on pleural lung surface and heavy congestion of liver
making it darkish black. Other abdominal organs had little or no
congestion/hemorrhage. Tentatively rhino died of disseminated intravascular coagulopathy
(DIC) as a result of viper or adder envenomation.

He sustained a deep wound on the left gluteal muscles and two superficial
wounds on the right gluteal muscles. At the perineal area were other
superficial linear injuries of various sizes. Wounds were cleaned with
Hydrogen Peroxide and Tincture of Iodine. Tetracycline wound spray was
topically applied. ‘Green Clay’ was liberally applied to ‘seal’ the gaping
wounds from ox perkers who were enlarging the wounds.
|
He was immobilized using 3mgs Etorphine and 40mgs
Azaperone. Vehicle was used though he charged twice he was darted while
running. 10mgs Nalophine was immediately injected into ear vein when he went
down after 5 minutes to lighten up anesthesia level. 15000mgs Amoxycilin was
injected intramuscularly. Pyrethrin pour-on was topically applied. He was
notched No. 639. He was reversed using 12mgs Diprenorhine into ear vein and
6mgs of the same intramuscularly.
