POSTMORTEM
REPORT OF TWO DEAD SQUIRRELS
History; One male squirrel was reported to have been found dead in the
morning of 12/3/2014. A female of the same family was reported unwell in late
morning of the same day and died shortly after. Only a young one was left.
Observations
made;
-Male was found buried and female dead in
the cage on sternal recumbence. Young one left was seemingly healthy.
-The cage was not well kept. Food and water
plates were found with contents
-Male was exhumed. Female was picked from
the cage. Male’s eyes were sunken and soiled. Female had dry pale mucus
membranes. Both had unpliable skin.
-On opening the carcass both skin was not
easily mobile and inside tissues appeared dry. In both there were no
pericardial, peritoneal and pleural fluids.
-All organs appeared dry, male
gastrointestinal tract was virtually empty and female’s glandular stomach was
full of ingesta while intestine was full of fermentation gas. In both there was
degree of organs congestion especially liver and mesentery.
Tentative
cause of death: It was evident that the animals had
extreme hunger and thirst. This caused cardiorespiratory embarrassment leading
to shock hence death.
